Canyon de Chelly National Park

Cliff Dwellings

Cliff Dwellings

This is a nice little park where most of the roads are on the rim of a canyon that the Indians settled a 1000 years ago.  You can get guided tours around the bottom of the canyon as well as drive around the rims above.  There is a campsite that charges nothing there  - donations only.  We were next to a guy from Germany that shipped his converted Sprinter RV over and toured for about a year.  He had done it before for 6 months.  Across from him was a Dutch travel writer with a rental RV.  I asked a guy with Oregon plates if it was cooler up there and he said he had no idea, he was from Denmark in a rental car.  I asked at the Visitor Center and many parks said that sometimes half of the visitors were from other countries, Germany, Canada, England a lot, but many other countries represented.     A family from Japan got a big kick out of Effie.

When you look down from the top of the canyon, you see some nice fields that are still being cultivated by Indians -maybe a hunded families are down there.
